On Being Lonesome

GOLDEN DRAGON (2011): Lizards are another consistent theme in my work as they often appear in my dreams. They perceive that which is not seen, but felt, much as we do when we are “in tune.” For me, the eyes of the endangered Galapagos Land Iguana echo its ancient wisdom and clairsentience.

PASSION IS PRAYER (2011): This Ecuador work is titled after a line in Veronica Franco’s response to the inquisitor in the film “Dangerous Beauty.” The day I visited the church in Quito which forms the background to this work, a man was leading a prayer asking God to save the “straying youth” of today. I bristled at his words. Anything we do with passion, with the joy of being alive, is a tribute to that which created us.

Tame and Wild
Following our trip to Peru, Llorraine and I visited Quito and the Galapagos Islands. Despite everything I had heard, I was not prepared for the gentility of Ecuadoreans and the natural spectacle of the Galapagos. Never before had I visited a place where every day I saw something new. The playful fauna – birds, reptiles, turtles, sharks, penguins, sea lions – filled the little girl with wonder. I was a five year old girl again, “remembering” myself in a wholesome way
