SOUL SKIN (2010): Titled after one of Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes’ stories, this work represents the human bond with nature and the universal truth that we are alone, yet all one. There is nothing like submersion in nature to feel this universal truth with certainty. Kangaroo Island
COD HOLE (2010): Inspired by a dive at a site by the same name in the Great Barrier Reef, this composition features one of the potato cods that frequent the site. Also included is a titan triggerfish. The ill-tempered fish was aggressively protecting her territory as I approached to take my picture. Hearing a moan of dismay from the dive master behind me, I quickly retreated. Apparently the bite of a titan triggerfish usually requires medical attention.
EARTH MOTHER (2010): Though a large city, Sydney resonates wit the respect its residents have of nature and Mother Earth. Most in this beautiful city commute by water ferry. This work features a sculpture by Helen Lette in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens which represents the multi-level connections between humans and the earth
EMERGENCY EXIT (2010): Lizard Island is located in the Outer Great Barrier Reef and hosts a marine biology research station, camping grounds and a small resort. The island’s waters are replete with endangered giant clam gardens which glitter with their jewel- toned mantles. The island’s monitor lizards are timeless. During my stay at this special island I felt as if I had stepped through an emergency exit, fleeing the pressure-filled personal and professional life I led at the time.
KANGAROO ISLAND SOUL STIRRING (2010): This island in southern Australia remains a pristine habitat for many species of plants and animals. The government of Australia works diligently to protect this wildlife sanctuary, even barring the import of bee products so as not to endanger the island’s unique honeybees, which trace back to a pure stock of Ligurian bees introduced to the island in the 1880s. This work warns of the dangers of not preserving the fragile balance found in nature.
TROPICAL LUST (2010): The underwater richness of Australia’s temperate and tropical waters will excite your every sense. The green iridescent mantle of the giant clam forms the background of this work, which also features a Leafy Sea Dragon – one of my reasons for visiting Australia.
